How to block ads on Android without root

Use a browser with an ad blocker built in. In Pulsar, Ad Shield is on from the first page you open, with nothing to set up and no root.

Why most ad blockers need extra steps on Android

Phone-wide blockers on Android usually work through a VPN slot or a private DNS setting. That can clash with a real VPN, drain the battery, or miss ads that come from the same address as the page.

A blocker inside the browser sees each page as it loads, so it can hide the ad, the empty box it leaves, and the tracker behind it.

Turn on Ad Shield in Pulsar

  1. Install Pulsar from the download page and open it.

  2. Open any page. Ad Shield is already on.

  3. Tap the shield in the address bar to see how many ads and trackers it blocked on this page.

  4. If a site breaks, tap the shield and turn it off for that site only.

Ad Shield’s lists update by themselves, so you never need to refresh them.

What Ad Shield blocks

Banner and video ads, pop-ups and pop-unders, cookie walls on many sites, and trackers that follow you between sites. Pages load faster and use less data.
